I am sitting in my office working and realize that for the past few days, I have been having pain in the middle of my lower right leg. I feel my leg to see if I get pain when I push on it, and realize that I don’t. The pain must be coming from inside. I stand up and see that my leg is swollen and cool to the touch. Which doctor do I call, Oncologist or PCP?
Since my oncologist won’t give me a remission or cancer free diagnosis, I never know who to call now. I have decided that if I have something with no obvious reason for it to exist, I call oncology. I put in a call to oncology, and they sent me that afternoon for an ultrasound to check for blood clots. Blood clots in legs and lungs are a side effect of the Tamoxifen I take (great…) For now, it doesn’t seem that I have a blood clot and the swelling and pain have both ceased.
Anyone Else have this Doctor Difficulty?
I would really like to know if others in my situation have a hard time deciding which doctor to call when something is going on. Obviously, I will call my PCP for a cold, allergies, sprains, etc. However, for other things like pain from an unknown origin, lumps under the skin, unexplained swelling, etc. I call my oncologist. Sometimes I wonder if she thinks I am a pest and other times I don’t really care what she thinks. I am the one dealing with the unknown because she doesn’t know if my cancer spread and now we are playing the waiting game. Why should I care if she thinks I’m a pest? She is getting paid either way.
I need to just make the best decision for me and not feel bad about it! I deserve good healthcare in whatever form that takes.
